I really do love my job. When I was choosing my course at University, I wanted to do law and become a hot shot corporate lawyer.
Unfortunately, I met the only accountant who was a decent salesman and ended up doing an accountancy degree course. It was a disaster. There’s probably no one less suited to being an accountant than me. So I ended up with a different degree altogether.
After a career in financial services in one way or another, I joined a firm of solicitors a good few years ago now and that is where I got my training in estate planning.
Any regrets? Yes – that I didn’t engage on an estate planning career much earlier. But what 17 year old thinks that family law is going to be sexy?
But it’s one of the most rewarding jobs you can do. Ok; maybe being a doctor or a nurse or paramedic is really rewarding. But I’ve never been good with sick people.
Almost without exception, after I have seen a client and as I walk out their door they say they are so glad they have got everything in place to secure their family and “We have been meaning to do it for ages. We just kept putting it off. But it was so easy”.
I know that no one wakes up in the morning thinking, “Right; today’s the day I am going to make a Will.” It takes a bit of building up to.
But I guarantee that it’s a lot easier than you think and, despite all the examples I might use of things that might go wrong, it’s not a gloomy subject at all. I still manage a smile every now and then.
